Endometrial Biopsy Instructions

Take 800 mg of Ibuprofen 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to procedure.

An endometrial biopsy is a minor procedure generally performed in the doctor's office to remove a sampling of tissue from the lining of the uterus. Generally, no anesthesia is required since the procedure is of very short duration (approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute.) The procedure may involve some moderate discomfort and cramping during the procedure and may persist for a short time afterwards. The procedure is performed by inserting a small tube or cannula through the cervical opening and extracting samples of tissue utilizing a mild suction technique. A clamp is generally placed on the cervix to assist this process. In some cases the cervical canal is stenotic or partially closed, and in these circumstances the cervix may need to be dilated which can add some time and discomfort as well.
